MINIMISING TRAFFIC RISKS
A SAFETY ISLAND DEFERRED
A recommendation which was before the City Council at its meeting last night, that authority be granted for an island refuge to be erected at the corner of Taranaki and Wakefield Streets in temporary material as an experiment, was referred back to the By-laws Committee. Councillor M. F. Luckie said the recommendation was made in consequence of a report by the traffic officer. The committee had gone carefully into the matter. . . The Mayor said that the Municipal Association proposed to ask the Government to relieve local bodies from any responsibility for accidents in connection with “islands.” If that were the case, why not wait a bit. Councillor Luckie replied that the chief inspector had said that the risk of accident without the islands was greater than with them. The Mayor: "Yes, but we don t take the risk.” .... . . The Mayor also raised the point as to where the money was to come from. If the Works Committee could find the money out of its vote, well and good. On the motion of Councillor G. Mitchell, the matter wes referred back, until it had been ascertained what the island would cost. This was agreed to.
