THE ROYAL SHOW
PROBABLY BEST HELD IN NEW ZEALAND Mr. G. A. Troup. Mayor of Wellington, has returned from the south very ranch impressed with all he saw in Southland. “[ have been present at several Royal Agricultural and Pastoral Shows, said Mr. Troup, “but I am inclined to think this year’s one was the best show I have ever seen. There were more entries than at Palmerston North, and I am sure that the quality was well maintained, particularly in the cattle sections. Perhaps I ought not to say so. for the cow I bred won the championship . for the third time in succession. This was Clunie Pietje Hope XXXIII. which was bred at my Friesian farm at Trentham some eight years ago. Then apart from the exhibits the management was excellent, everything went off by the clock, as it were, and there was never a hitch in any <»f the events. “The enthusiasm of the people was tremendous. They are justly proud of their district aud proud of their show, and they were not afraid to show it. On the days I was there there were between 25.000 and 30.000 people present each day. figures that show how the whole district rose to the occasion. J.he weather wns beautiful the whole time 1 was in Southland, and the country looked very well indeed. . . . “Southland is a great province .with fine possibilities. The holdings are perhaps bigger there than they are up this wav. but whilSt years ago we had the impression that much of the. land was too wet. drainage and liming of the soil have done marvels, and the production is eminently satisfactory. The spin of the people is most commendable and their kindness to strangers is proverbial.
