CLOSER SETTLEMENT
PROGRESS LEAGUE AND FARMERS’ UNION Masterton, December IS. Asking support of a voluntary closer settlement scheme rather than compulsory Government scheme, the Wairarapa Progress League wrote to to-day’s meeting of the Wairarapa Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union. It was also requested that members be appointed to confer with the league’s closer settlement committee. The president. Mr. C. C. .Jackson, observed that he had been told that Carterton’s prosperity could be attributed to the amount of closer settlement about that town. If that was so then the scheme had another sound argument in its favour. for Carterton. he himself had noticed. appeared to be particularly prosr porous. Mr. Jackson said he thought the union should support the league, but remarked that the whole scheme hinged on the question of cheap money. Mr. A. Ross pointed out that at present it was uncertain whether the Progress League would bo able to carry on, as it was meeting dilliculty in the matter of linanee, and on liis suggestion it was finally decided to hold the matter over until the next meeting, when the league’s position will be known. CYRTERTON REFUSE TO SUPPORT LEAGUE. Carterton. December IS. At a meeting of the Carterton Borough Council last night it was decided to inform the Wairarapa Progress League that the council was not prepared to continue its contribution to the league for another year.
