UNEMPLOYED RELIEF
POSITION EASIER The Social Welfare Committee, in its report to the 'Wellington Hospital Board yesterday, stated that the position regarding the unemployed appeared to be easier'. The daily average of cases had been five for October, against 27 for October last year and 31 for October, 1927. Mr. G. Petherick, chairman of the committee, said the expenditure for the eight months April-November was nearly £5OO below the estimates, and the receipts had exceeded the estimates by £5OO. They were still getting a number of unemployment cases among married men with families, but tlie number of single men was very small indeed. The daily average hail fallen to five, which was very satisfactory. Some of the receipts included amounts to pay for clothes, boots, blankets, etc., supplied to those sent to relief works.
