REFORM AND UNITED

DISCOVERING THE DIFFERENCE “If a group of Reformers and Uniteds were discussing politics in general it would take a suiter .Sherlock Holmes to discover any clue'that would enable you to determine the difference. They are, however, kept apart to-day because no one understanding New Zealand politics can imagine Sir Joseph Ward linking up with Mr. Coates, and the Reformers, however much the remaining members of the United Party may desire to do so,” declared Mr. W. Nash, the Labour candidate for the Hutt by-election, when speaking at Petone last night. “If proof is required,” said Mr. Nash, "you can get it from a comparatively recent invented scientific machine. In the psychological world to-day they have a new machine called the hippchronoscope. This machine is so sensitive that it records the time for the reactions of the nerves of persons when certain subjects are mentioned. For example, if you mentioned the word ‘dog’ to a man who had just been chased out a yard by a 'Skye terrier his reactions would be almost rapid enough to break the machine, but mention the same word to a dog trainer and you wouldn't know that the machine was recording. You mention Mark Nicholls to Eric of Berhampore and you would get the same result as if you mention George Nepin to a Hawke’s Bay Maori; the records would be identical. If you experimented with the machine on members of the Reform and United Parties and mentioned Public servants' salaries you would get exactly the same result.”
