AIRPORT BY-LAWS

SCHEDULE OF LANDING AND HOUSING FEES ALTITUDE REGULATIONS OBJECTION TO USE OF WORD “AERODROME” Last Saturday week’s Air Pageant and'the subsequent opening of the city’s aerodrome at Rongotai quickened the City Council into action. At yesterday’s special meeting the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup) introduced a new Wellington city aerodrome control amendment by-law which deals with several aspects of flying and the use of the council’s flying ground at Rongotai. What’s In a Name? In the first place the Mayor had to explain why, all through the bylaw, the word “airport” had to be changed to “aerodrome.” “The Minister of Defence,” said the Mayor, “has got it into his head that there is a difference between an airport and an aerodrome. He conceives an aerodrome to be merely a, landing place, whilst an airport is a kind of home for all aircraft. Anyway, he insists on us calling our ground an aerodrome in case the Government later makes an airport at Porirua or somewhere else.” Charges for Admission. The new by-law provides that the council may make charges for admission to the aerodrome at any time provided that the amount of such charges, shall be as follows: Adults one shilling; children under the age of 15 years, sixpence. No charge shall be made under the clause on any day unless notice shall be given under the hand of the town clerk that charges specified in such notice will be made, such advertisement to be inserted in some newspaper circulating in the city of Wellington not earlier than the eighth nor later than the third day before the day on .which it is proposed to charge.

No person shall without the consent of: the caretaker enter any hangar* building or structure at the aerodrome other than a grandstand or staging erected for the purpose of affording a view of the landing area. Aerodrome Fees. The fees payable to the council in respect of the landing and housing of aircraft at the airport shall be those set out in the following schedule: Landing fees for Daily single housing landing, fees.

The council may by resolution fix a special scale of charges for members of aero clubs. Height of Flight.

No person shall fly any aircraft over any building in the city of Wellington at a height above the ground level less than. 2000 feet except when within gliding distance of the landing area at the airport. Where any aircraft is being flown over the city and the engine of such aircraft fails the pilot shall endeavour to the best of his ability to land in the sea as near the edge as possible. The council may by resolution, publicly notified, make an addition to the charges hereinbefore specified—charges in respect of (1) the use of enclosures for the parking of motor and other vehicles, and (2) the admission of the public to enclosures or stands. The following new by-law was added at the meeting: “Such monthly charges inclusive of landing fees shall entitle the payer to land his vehicle on not more than three occasions on each day, and every landing in excess of twice on any day shall be paid for at ordinary rates.” ___
