“TIMES ARE HARD” Dominion Special Service. Auckland, November 23. This morning Detective-Sergeant M, C. Hugh and Detective Nalder raided the office of Robert Francis Bennett at 25 Swanson Chambers, Swanson Street, and arrested him on a charge of keeping a common gaming house. They also arrested Frederick James Dryland, a young man, on a charge of being found on premises without lawful excuse. Both men later appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., tit the Magistrate’s Court, when each pleaded guilty. Chief-Detective Hammond said Bennett, who was a well-known bookmaker, had appeared on a similar charge about seven months ago, when lie was fined £lOO. “I think Dryland has been up before, too,” added the chief-detec-tive. “Times are hardi sir,” Bennett told Mr. Hunt. The Magistrate: Too many favourites coming home, I suppose. (Laughter.) Mr. Hammond: There is no suggestion izat Bennett has not been meeting his obligations. He’s all right as far as that’s concerned. Mr. Hunt: Well, Bennett has pleaded guilty and has not told a lot of lies, so that can be taken into consideration. He will be fined another £lOO. Dryland was fined £5.
