The Hon. Sir Walter Carucross, Speaker of the Legislative Council, arrived yesterday from Eltham, for the purpose of attending the funeral of the late Mr. A. F. Lowe to-day. Commissioner Cunningham, of the Salvation Army, aud Mrs. Cunningham returned to Wellington from the north yesterday. Sir George Fowlds returned to Auckland yesterday after a short visit to Wellington. Mr. A. Seed, secretary of the New Zealand Sawmillers’ Federation, is at present in North Auckland, travelling with the Auckland Commerce train. He is expected back in Wellington on Monday. Viscount Craigavoii and Viscountess Craigavou have left Auckland ou a visit to Rotorua. Dr. J. Hight, Rector of Canterbury College, who came to Wellington for a meeting of the University Senate, returned by the ferry steamer last night. Air. R. McKeen, M.P., has left on a visit to Christchurch. Air. C. N. Draper, who is going Home early in the New Year, has resigned his position as manager of the Dunedin branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd. (reports a Special Service message). Air. J. A. Cameron, who is at present manager of the Invercargill office, will succeed Air. Draper at Dunedin, and Air. W. J. McKitterick has been appointed manager at Invercargill. A Press Association telegram from Christchurch announces that the death occurred yesterday of Dr. Edward George Levinge, formerly medical superintendent of Seacliff Mental Hospital. Deceased live in retirement at Christchurch for many years. The death occurred yesterday of Mr. ■William Wardell, one of the founders of the well-known grocery business bearing the name (states a Press Association telegram from Christchurch). Death followed a prolonged illness. With his brothers, William Wardell founded the business at Dunedin and Christchurch, and later opened the branch at Wellington.

The death occurred yesterday at his residence, Puriri Street, Lower Hutt, of Mr. Cecil Hooper Biss, for many years of the Valuation Department in Wellington. The late Air. Biss was the eldest son of the late Rev. William Biss, formerly of Nelson, and in his younger days was a prominent member of the old Phoenix Cricket Club, and of the now-defunct D Battery of artillery volunteers. The deceased is survived by a widow, a daughter of the late Air. and Airs. A. E. Rowden, of Wellington, and two sons, Air. S. and R. Biss, of Martinborough, and Air. E. H. Biss, of Wellington. Regret at the impending departure from New Zealand of His Excellency the Governor-General (Sir Charles Fergusson) aud Lady Alice Fergusson is expressed in the annual report of the Dominion executive of the St. John Ambulance Association. “Sir Charles has taken a very personal interest in all branches of our work throughout the Dominion,” states the report.. “His presence in our buildings and his addresses to our members have been very helpful and inspiring. He has taken a keen interest in the development of the work of the Order and has won the gratitude and admiration of all of our members. Her Excellency Lady Alice Fergusson has been a friend to our nursing divisions and district nursing guild, and her stay of live years amongst us has been an encouragement to all who are interested in the alleviation of sickness and distress.”
