COMPETITIONS SOCIETY

Sir,—At the annual meeting of , the Wellington Competitions Society, which was held last evening, reference, was made by u member present to a possible reduction iu the members’ subscriptions. I am convinced that such a reduction would be a mistake for two reasons, first, because the society requires increased revenue and increased interest in its operations, and it cannot afford to make any reduction, an, secondly, the present subscription gives a member a large concession, as the following will show. Take the length of the festival to be for two weeks —with three sessions each day, in two or three halls this represents thirty-six sessions for the whole season. The prices of admission at the doors are: Morning, 6d.; afternoon, 1/-1 evening, 3/-, 2/-, and 1/-. if an interested person attended every session during the season (and many people who hold season tickets do so) such person not being a member would pay, say: 12 sessions at (id. equals 6/-; 12 sessions at 1/- equals 12/-; 12 sessions at 3/- equals £l/16/-: total £2/14/-. And as a member of the society receives two transferable tickets he obtains the equivalent of £5/0/8, and has to pay only £l/10/- for the privilege. The society is looking for greater support from the public—hence that support can best be given by the public by their becoming members and thus receiving two tickets which (as stated) represent an admission value of £5/8/-, for which they have to pay only £l/10/-; moreover, all members can give their friends a pleasure by allowing the use of the transferable tickets. It is obvious that the society cannot afford to reduce the membership sugscription, and must look to the public for further support. The society is a Wellington institution, and has done valuable work for many years, and deserves the extra assistance which it now seeks. —I am, etc., F. G. CRAY. Wellington, November 20.
