Sir,—Mr. Bigham, of U.S.A., thinks, among other fluttering things, that our police are clever and up to date. Now, sir, an American citizen, wanted by the police, resided for 13 years under their nose, and it took a private detective to find him. Docs this show any particular ability on the part of our Police force? Yet two more cases: A man from Palmerston North parading as a commercial traveller visited Ohakune three years ago. At least two cheques were given to tradesmen and cash received, and though these cheques were worthless the man was never secured by the police. About six months ago another man travelling as a surveyor visiter! the same district, and by issuing valueless cheques took tradesmen down for about. £32. and although the police have every particular about this man he, too, is keeping the even tenor of his way and smiling alike at the obliging tradespeople and at the police.—l am. etc., BITTEN.
