EFFECT OF “TALKIES”

TEACHERS INVESTIGATING Dominion Special Service. Auckland, November 17. The influence of moving pictures, particularly talkies, upon school children, is being investigated by the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute and the Auckland Headmasters’ Association. The view is expressed by some teachers that the speech of children will suffer from talkies, while supervision of children at theatres is considered to be inadequate. It is considered the plots of many screen stories shown to children are unsuitable. The Americanisation of speech is feared as a result of the introduction of talkies. The was discussed by the committee of the Institute on Saturday. No resolutions were passed, as the matter is to be raised at a meeting of Auckland teachers.
