ENGLISH SPEAKING UNION.

The English Speaking Union decided at the last executive meeting to hold this month’s social afternoon on America’s Thanksgiving Day—November 28—and to invite Americans residing in Wellington to attend. Thanksgiving Day in America is a very old festival, having been instituted by the Pilgrim Fathers iu thanksgiving for a good harvest, and is kept as a day of family reunion. It was a movable feast until after the Civil AVar, when Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the fourth Thursday in November to be kept as a thanksgiving, and ever since that has been the day fixed. Another function of the E.S.U. will be a reception to those members of the union who will be on board the Malola,' and as she only calls at Auckland Miss Kcnrick, late secretary of the union, who is now in that city, will arrange the function to take place there.
