WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

The first meeting of the newly-formed AVomen’s Institute at Reikorangi, Waikauae, was held at the local hall on AVednesday afternoon. Mrs. Monk presided over an attendance of twenty-five, among whom were several visitors from Paraparaumu. The speaker was Mrs. Kelso; of Paraparaumu, who took Ler listeners with her in imagination to a farm in South Africa, describing with humour the life among the Kaffirs and Basutos, as well as the Dutch. Mrs. Davis, of Lower Hutt, then demonstrated the making of an ottoman, showing step by step how the upholstery was done. She also described how to make a bolster cushion, and finally framed a picture in passe-partout. Mrs. Monk moved a vote of thanks to the visitors. Tea was dispensed by the hostesses, Mesdames Mont and Neilson, Misses Smith and Anderson.

Once again the Agnes Samson salon, Customhouse Quay, have received a shipment of smart garments, personally selected by Miss Agnes Samson in London and Paris. Miss Samson has the advantage of knowing just what her clientele needs for the New Zealand climatic conditions. Included are tennis and runabout frocks that do not fear die wash-tub, and are of good British silks, in various shades, tailored, and with a charming freshness and simplicity. An attractive two-piece ensemble in a good size is of black crepe de chine. The frock has a top of printed metal brocade, in ’gold,' black and colours, including a good deal of green. A line of ivy leaves marks the hip-liue and the skirt descends in pleats. The coat is hip length. Jumper blouses of British silk in several shades fill a long-felt want, and a general, survey rpveals new hats, frocks, and smart bags and necklets—those indespensable accessories for the well-dressed woman,— (Advt.)
