DAY OF SURPRISES

WELLINGTON TROTTING CLUB’S MEETING N.Z. CUP TRIAL TO GOLD JACKET STEEL ALL WINS BOLLARD MEMORIAL At the break of dawn on Saturday things looked anything but promising from a weather point of’view for the Wellington Club’s meeting, but as the morning wore on there was a steady improvement, and the afternoon was a delightful one, enabling the racing to be conducted under very favourable conditions. The race for the New Zealand Cup Trial Handicap, as was to be expected, provider! a thrilling contest.

The new stand and other improvements effected to the enclosures made things much more comfortable for patrons, but the stand accommodation was taxed to its utmost. After Saturday’s experience it looks as though it will not be long before the club will have to consider the question of further improvements to the stand accommodation. The new course is a very fine one in fact it is questionable whether it will not ultimately rank as the best course iu the Dominion. The totalisator handled the sum of £28,565, as against £28,180 10s. for the corresponding meeting last year, an iucrease of £2404 10s. . NOVICE HANDICAP. Mac Locanda was made favourite for the Novice Handicap, but was not quite equal to the task of winning. At the stand the first time round the order was Baron Derby,‘Mac Locanda, Lady Author, aud Grand Canyon, but racing down the back Lady Author assumed charge, and Grand Canyon lost ground through breaking. Turning into the straight for the last time Baron Derby came out slightly from the rails, Holmes driving the favourite through and heading his opponent. In a punishing finish Baron Derby did his best and won by half a length. Jessie Huon outstayed the others and secured ■ third money. Lady Author was fourth, just in front of Grand Canyon, who but for breaking must have been a hard horse to beat. PETONE HANDICAP. Wah, the good-looking son of Pcterwah —Amy Dillon, was made favourite for the Pe.tone Handicap, but he did not go steadily and so lost his chance. Passing the stand the first time the order was' Peter Eyre, Eva Reta, Wah. and Bon Boy. Racing down the back Peter Eyre broke. Bon Boy., running into second position, St. Petrbx. Nelson Parrish and Tamahiue also improving their position. Tninahine, going steadily, was lying fourth as they swung 1 round the western bend, where Bon Boy ran to the front and turning into the ; straight appeared to have the- race won. Tamaliine. however, finished very strongly and challenging Bon Boy, who became unstcadied and lost ground, went on to win by about a length. St. Petrox was three lengths away third, with Nelson Parrish fourth. BOLLARD HANDICAP. Aleron was favourite for the Bollard Handicap, but was soon in' an impossible position through failing to go away right. He, however, paced attractively when he settled down and was up fifth at the finish. Curfew Boy was the early leader from Richore and Muriel de Oro. At the stand these three were still In charge, with Arlki Toa fourth, with the others in close attendance. There was no substantial alteration of positions over the next six furlongs, but going ,out of the straight the last time Richore moved into first position. Racing down the back Ariki Toa had charge fropi Richore, Curfew Boy and Great Logan. Zelia and Steel All improved their position, substantially over the next furlong and Zelia was lying second to Ariki Toa as the straight was reached, with Groat Logan nnd Steel All most prominent of the others. There was a great race down the straight. Steel All. nicely handled by Withers, getting up in time to win bv three-quarters of a length from Ariki Toa. While Great. Logan, finishing better than Zelia. secured third money. ! BOROUCtH HANTICAP. The Borough' Handicap provided another 1 interesting contest. At the end of a furlong El Direct had charge from Hostess (who commenced very smartly), Haydock, and Sandy Pointer. Hostess and El Direct were still in charge down the back ayd past the stand the second time, at which point their nearest opponents were Haydock, Sandy Pointer, Cushla d’Or, and Hnlniore. Racing for ;home, Hostess was in charge fr<«m Sandy Pointer nnd El Direct. The latter appeared to look for an opening on the ’outside of Hostess, but tlie driver of Sandy Pointer held liis position, and El Direct lied to swing over to the rail side. Hostess won nicely, El Direct beating Sandy Pointer narrowly for second money. N.Z.' CUP TRIAL. Quality, Jack Potts, and Talaro were scratched for the N.Z. Cup Trial Handicap, leaving ten of the best horses in the land to contest the event. Padlock commenced very smartly and made up quite a aubstaV.lal part of his handicap over the first furlong. At the stand tlie first time Western King. Jean McElwyn, and Malwharit) were in charge of a bunched field. Racing down the back the field was running in mass formation, and as they commenced tlie western bend au unfortunate mix-up occurred, Jean McElwyn, K.oliflra, vVcbteru King, and Maiwhariti living involved. On the bend the colours of Padlock could be seen threading their way through the field. He had a clear lead as the straight was reached, and it seemed as though he would be a comfortable winner. In the run home, however, Gold Jacket outpaced him and won a well-earned victory by half a length. Great Bingen being a length and a half , further back, with Linkman fourth. SHORT HANDICAP. Llewellyn was a very warm favourite for the Short Handicap, and lie was responsible for liis own defeat by not pacing steadily. Teike failed to go away and took no part in the race. Drift Wave was the earlv leader from Brent Zolock, with Llewellyn third, but he went to a break and lost his position. Bingen Maid led at the straight , entrance, but could not withstand the challenges of Nelsonian nnd Reylet, the former winning by a length and a half. Bingen Maid was half a length away third, and Llewellyn fourth. r PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP. Audo Spray, Rnngitero, nnd Tamaliine were scratched for the President’s Handicap, Deceitful being made favourite from Wah and Bon Boy. Robert Todd was the early leader, and at tlie stand led from Eva Beta. Miss Leda, Peter Eyre, and St. Petrox. Robert Todd broke oh the eastern bend. Miss Leda assuming charge and loading down the back from Robert Todd, Peter Eyre, St. Petrox, and Deceitful. Wah theii broke and lost his position. Nelson Parrish had had enough four furlongs from home, Miss Leda continuing to trot steadily and leading the field. Racing round the western bend both Deceitful aud St. Petrox broke when in good positions, but the latter came again and got third to Miss Leda and Peter Eyre, with Bon Boy In fourth tflace. It is a very long time since Miss Leda won a race, aud she returned a sensational dividend. WELLINGTON HANDICAP. There were several scratchings in tlie Wellington Handicap, leaving 14 runners, of whom several were well backed. Zelia failed to moye away correctly when the tapes were released, and was soon in a hopeless position. El Direct was the early leader, and at the stand had charge from Kelp, Haydock, High Sea, and Red Rey. The former dropped back a few places down the back, but camo again over the last three furlongs to fight out a great finish with Loiterer, who gained the verdict by a head. Kelp was a close third, and Avenger fourth. RESULTS IN DETAIL Detailed results are as follow: — NEW TRACK NOVICE HANDICAP (harness), of 175 sovs.. second 30 sovs., third 20 sovs.; elasg 3.59.
