BANKS PENINSULA MEETING

QUARTERDECK WINS AKAROA HANDICAP LE BONS HANDICAP TO THURSO Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, November 2. The Banks Peninsula Racing Club's meeting was held at Motukarara to-day in flue but windy weather and there was a large attendance. The totalisator handled £ 10,018 10s. in comparison with £10,274 10s. last year. OKAINS TRIAL STAKES. Several withdrawals reduced the field for the Okains Trial Stakes to fifteen runners, Pixie Gold being made a few tickets better favourite than Desert Song. I’ixic Gold began quickly from a good start and was soon in froni. Pixie Gold was first into the straight from Audience, Desert Song and Royal Stanley, and, withstanding a challenge from Audleucc, beat her home by a bare length. Desert Song was three lengths away in front of Netley, Bay Queen. Straight Course, and Pahautauul. DUVAL’CHELLE HANDICAP. The three-year-old Royal Silk was made tlic public choice in the Duvauclielle Handicap Trot, and he went a good race, but was unable to concede his handicap. Royal Iroquois was the early leader and piloted Hakarl and Kate Logan past the stand the first time. Mahars, Broker and Happy Lass closed on the leaders at the far turn. Kate Logan then supplanted Royal Iroquois and led to the straight from Mussolini, Hakari and Happy Lass. Kate Logan was first into the run home, but inside the distance had to submit to a challenge by Happy Lass, who beat her by half a length. Mussolini was six lengths back in front of the favourite, Hakarl and Royal Iroquois. AKAROA HANDICAP. The withdrawals of Amor, Prickles, Malmsey, Chickwheat and Haze left five runners for the Akaroa Handicap. rhe public went strongly for Hoylake and Meprisant and this pair carried the bulk of the investments. The race was run at a middling pace from the start. Sea Raid acted as the early pacemaker, but under a pull and she was still in front at the far turn where she was put out of the contest by the saddle slipping up on her neck. Quarterdeck then stole a march on the pmall field and rushed to the front. She soon opened up a gap and led into the straight from Count Cavour, Meprisant and Hoylake. Count Cavour threw out a challenge to Quarterdeck when turned for home, but failed to make any impression, and then Meprisant essayed a finishing run, but the Chokebore mare had too much in hand and she won comfortably by three lengths from Meprisant. who cut Count Cavour out of second money by half a length Hoylake, who always occupied a rear position, was a length away next. HALSWELL HACK. Te Awhina, Bulolo, Page Boy, Stately and Shining Star were withdrawn from the Halswell Hack Handicap, for which Bonrose was made a pronounced favourite. She was In a promising position alongside the leader, Solgele, until well into the straight, but both were tackled by Miss Nightraid and Sapient inside the distance, and In an interesting finish Miss Nightraid gained the verdict by a -neck "from Sapient, who was half a length in front of Bonrose. Coupling was next and then came Fair Exchange- Juniper and Solgele. The winner was the last to leave the mark and did not have a very good passage in the straight. LE BONS HANDICAP. The Le Bons Handicap was robbed of much of its interest by a very unsatisfactory start, Haze and Some Lad being left standing at the post, and the remaining four Went off in straggling order. Buoyant shot away from Arcli Arrow, Thurso and Nasstorl, and they entered the straight in this order. Buoyant weakened inside the distance, when Thurso drew up alongside, and Arch Arrow, in endeavouring to get between, was squeezed back. Thurso went on to win by a length from Buoyant, who stayed on to beat Arch Arrow by half a length, with Nasstori beaten off. , An inquiry into the start elicited the fact that, owing to the wind, the riders of the two hbrses left, misunderstood the starter’s call nnd the stewards decided that the official was not to blame. KAITUNA HIGH-WEIGHT. Page Boy was voted the best proposition in the Kaltuna High-weight Hack Handicap. but he got away badly and was rushed to the lead after two furlongs had been covered. He was first into the straight from The Viscount, Master Clarence and Swoopalong, but was done with half way down the running, and Master Clarence, finishing strongly, recorded a comfortable victory by three lengths from Swoopalong, who got up to beat The Visebunt by a neck with the favourite half a length away. The remainder were tailed off, Shining Star occupying last berth. BRACKENFIELD HANDICAP. Ranelagh was always favourite for the Brackenfield Flying Hack Handicap, but he was slow to move oft and was unlucky to get beaten. Haulage nnd Grand Acre led out from the start and piloted Solgele, Tane and Bulolo to the far turn. Solgele took charge at the straight entrance, and withstanding belated challenges by Ranelagh and Plmstar, bent Ranelagh by half a length. Plmstar, who drawing the Inside running lost his place in the first furlong, finished strongly in third place, a nock away. Tane headed the remainder. The concluding event, the Little River Handicap Trot, resolved itself into a race between Alexis and Chrystal. who were together well clear of the field throughout the second circuit. In a long sustained finish between the pair. Alexis h»ng on to boat Chrvstnl by a length. The third horse. Calm Voyage, was about fifty yards back with Mussolini next in front of the strung-out remainder. DETAILS OF THE RACING By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, November 2. There was a fair amount of galloping nt Ellerslie on Saturday, but the times were poor. The course proper had been top-dressed and the rain on top made it ■ slow. The following worked on this track with the trestles fifty feet out:— King Emerald alone went freely over a mile in Imin. 52 4-ssee. He seemed to relish the conditions. Gemlight was a shade better than Diamond Queen over five furlongs in Imin. 10 2-ssee. Bombarder pleased by giving Red Lion three lengths’ start and beating him ovor live furlong I in Imin. 9 2-ssec. There is a suspicion that Red Lion loafs on the track. Brampton and Patutahl took Imin. 27 2-5 sec. for six furlongs, going easily. War Officer shaded Thursby over six furlongs in poor time. Tetrachate was superior to good idea over fife furlongs in Imin. 9 4-ssec. Lady’s Boy easily beat Tukohoa over the same distance in Imin. 11 4-ssec. Standfast just beat Cynthia N. over seven furlongs in Imin. 39 4-ssec., and Antonine ran a round In 2mln. 20 3-usee. Gay Cockade could have improved. on 56 fl-osee. for half a mile. , Roman Pearl and Measurer were on terms over five furlongs, nicely run in Imin. 9 2-SSOC. Adjuster, Golden Wedding. Sleepy Sol, Bob Amans and Mountain Guide were in that order over four hurdles, all fencing safely. Adjuster gave an improved display, but Golden Wedding was most impressive. H, Dulleu will ride her at Whangarei and she is likely to be favourite. Tremotus. Thespes, Sllene and Great Emblem finished as named over three furlongs in 40 l-sseo. ThespOs was last away and both he and Tremotus are pleasing in their work. There was a lot of work on No. 3 grass but it had little immediate interest, the times being poor. Bennte and the St. Amans colt in T. Carmont’s stable are both to be added to the list of geldings and will be off the scene for some time. Lothario, the full-brother to Joy King, was sent back to Sydney on Friday last. He has been under ,T. Williamson's care for some time as his owner thought a spell in New Zealand would be to his advantage. » —* — ' BACK HOME MEN AND HORSES RETURN. Five horses in charge of J. Fellder returned home by the Manuka -yesterday. Feilder lias been in Sydney and Melbourne, primarily to try for big taoney with the three-year-old filly Nedda, but she failed to show any form on the trip. Mr. 11. Acton Adams, who has his horses racing in Western Australia, was also a passenger.
