MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

POLICE, BY-LAW, AND CIVIL CASES Mr. E. Page, S.M., dealt with police cases in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. John Fitzgerald, alias Thomas Glen, a labourer, aged 36, was convicted on a charge of assaulting John Sweet, being fined £5 and ordered to pay £1 witnesses’ expenses, in default one month’s imprisonment. The Magistrate ordered that half the fine, if paid, be given to the complainant. Sweet, who is the proprietor of a cafe in the city, was assaulted on his own premises. Accused had several prior convictions for assault and was described by Sub-Inspector Lander “as a very pugnacious sort of man.” Frederick Richard Slinn, aged. 67, was fined- £l, in default seven days’ imprisonment, for casting offensive matter. He was convicted and discharged for drunkenness. Harold Vivian Costley. a steward and waiter, aged 33, who admitted stealing an overcoat from a motor-car which was parked in the city valued at £4 los., the property of Nagib Jamed, was fined £5, in default two months’ imprisonment. Accused, who had a prior conviction for theft, was also ordered to pay Bs., which amount he received for the coat when he disposed of it. BY-LAW CASES Offenders against the by-laws were dealt with by Mr. T. B. McNeil, S.M. William Williams was fined £2 for dangerous driving. He was convicted and discharged for having no driver’s license, and fined £1 for having no silencer on his machine. For plying for hire On an unauthorised Stand, Reginald Austin and James Watkins were convicted and ordered to pay 10s. costs. Henry H. D. Bothamley was fined ss. and Charles 11. Bustard 10s. for parking their vehicles in prohibited areas. Ralph von Asch, Arthur SigglekoU, ana Kenneth R. Dutton were fined 108. each, and the Rev. Howard Elliott ss. for parking their vehicles in prohibited areas. William Vlggars and John W. Richards were fined £1 each for having fio lights. On a like charge Peter Thomson and Bertie J. Childs were fined ss. each. Jack Russell and E. M. Taylor were fined £1 each for having nO driver’s license, an offence which cost Donald Henderson 10s. and Fred Moore ss.

Cyril J. West was fined £1 on one charge of failing to obtain a heavy traffic license, and 10s. on each of three other Similar charges. Charles Free and Sydney Schuster were each fined ss. for allowing Stock to wander, and oh a similar charge James Wright was fined 2s. 6d.

For driving the wrong way in a oneway street, James Barron was fined 10s., and George Cochrane ss. Clarence Joslin was fined £1 for having used profane and indecent language. For plying for hire oil an unauthorised stand he was convicted and ordered to pay 10s. costs, as he also was for disobeying a traffic inspector’s direction. Herbert Haines was fined ss. for driving against an automatic stop signal. Raymond IL Haines, for parking more than twelve inches from the kerb, was fined ss.
