AMATEUR ATHLETICS

MEETING OF ASSOCIATION

RECORD NOT RECOGNISED The monthly meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was held last night. Mr. R. W. McVilly presided. A letter was received from the Women’s International Sports Federation stating that the 7 International Amateur Athletic Federation had sent on the New Zealand Council’s application for the recognition as a world’s record of a performance (100yds. iu 11 l-ssec.), made by Miss Elsie Martyn. “First of all we must tell you,” said the letter, “that the only records we accept to examine are those communicated by an affiliated federation. We have an agreement with the International Amateur Athletic Federation which wits signed ip 1926 (our association was created in 1921), according to which we have our own status as in the past, but we must follow their rules with the alteration we find necessary for women. We also must affiliate for women the federations already affiliated to the 1.A.A.F., or the women’s association recognised by the male federation in the country.” It was pointed out that the first thing for the New Zealand Association to do Was to affiliate.

“Now, as to records, our 1928 Congress decided with a unanimous vote to register only the metric distances and weights, such as mentioned in our rules," the letter proceeded. “Moreover, the 1928 Congress decided to cross out entirely the performances which are not classical, although we mentioned them in our booklet after the list of world's records. We are therefore sorry we cannot examine your 100 yards record, find must state for your information that it whs held by a French runner (Mlle. Radidenu) with a time of 11 l-sseo.” On the motion of Mr. H. J. Austad it was decided to seek afliliation.
