Explosion following explosion disturbed the chilly serenity of the New Plymouth railway station the other morning upon the departure of the southward bound mail train, and caused many a passenger to pop a surprised face out of a hastily-opened window. But it was only the railwaymen’s playful way of farewelling with a few detonators their retiring stationmaster, Mr. H. F. Mirams. who was leaving on the train for Auckland. A salute, not nine guns, but of about nine shill blasts of the whistle, was blown from a nearby engine to add to the heurtiaesa of the farewell.
