' The situation created by to-day’s stoppage of the Lancashire cotton mills, following the employers’ notice of a wage cut of 2s. fid. in the £l, is under examination by the Government The Minister of Labour, Miss Mar garet Bondfield, it was announced today, has received the report of last week’s negotiations and has considered the present position, but for the present she feels that there is no action which her Department can helpfully take. Meanwhile, several mills not affiliated to the Master Cotton Spinners’ Federation have decided to carry on without cutting wages. WAGE-CUT MAY BE MODIFIED Australian Press Association. (Rec. July 30, 5.5 p.m.) London, July 29. Hopes have been aroused that the spinners and cardroom operatives will later in the week seek to negotiate a separate agreement in the Lancashire cotton industry. In that event the employers are likely to modify the wage cut Lancashire believes that' the next step rests with the Government. It is understood that Mr. MacDonald is considering a personal intervention.
