WORLD JAMBOREE

FIFTY THOUSAND BOY SCOUTS AT BIRKENHEAD WONDERFUL GATHERING OF NATIONS ONLY TWO COUNTRIES NOT REPRESENTED (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright) Australian Press Association. (Rec. July 30, 8.30 p.m.) London, July 30. By to-night fifty thousand boys who are assembled for the World Jamboree of Boy Scouts will be under canvas at Arrow Park, Birkenhead. One writer describes it as the most wonderful gathering of the nations of the world since the building of the Tower of Babel came to an untimely end. All yesterday train after train emptied a freight of boys, who reported to headquarters. Scouts from New Zealand and Australia fraternised with Americans in tartan lumber jackets. Sea Scouts in American navy porkpie caps swopped yarns with boys from Canada. Bright little Japs, fraternised with giants from Scandinavia. Everybody seemed concerned that the solitary lad from the Fiji Islands should not feel lonely. When the Duke of Connaught opens the Jamboree on Wednesday there will be only two countries unrepresented officially, namely, Russia and Italy. The whole of the jgeat undulating Jamboree city covers 450 acres, broken up with roads picturesquely named Pilgrim’s Way, Lion Horse, Bull Alley, Kangaroo, Mongoose, Tiger Lane. Everywhere there is the same wonderful spirit of camaraderie displayed. Throughout yesterday afternoon there were many rehearsals of great pageants to be staged before the Prince of Wales on Thursday and Friday.
