CARTERTON BOROUGH

4 YEAR’S WORK REVIEWED BY MAYOR. Carterton, May 3. At the last meeting of the Carterton Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr. W. Fisher), in thanking the electors for their coniidence in electing him unopposed to the position of Mayor for the fourth term, said that it afforded him pleasure in being in a position to state that the finances and general works of the borough were in a very satisfactory state. During the year ended March 31, 19-7, probably the most successful effort to cope with the very urgent question of an adequate water supply to the borough was carried out at a cost of £ll4 under the estimated figures, the balance saved being expended on further reticulation of the borough. The sum of £2500 had been expended during the past two years out of revenue on the reticulation, 77 chains of six-inch main and 172 chains of fourinch main having been installed. There remained at the present time only a comparatively small area for further reticulation. All parts of the borough were within easy control in the event of fire. A further extension of the drainage of 21 chains had been carried out on Park Road, Costley, Wakelin and Seddon Streets. The expense incurred in that work was met out of revenue. , During the vear ended March 31, 1918, 139 chains of ‘High Street had been retarred, three chains of Broadway sealed, 57 chains of new footpaths tarred, and 33 chains had received a second coating. Park Road had been, during the past year, treated with a double coat of tar, and that would effect a considerable saving by eliminating the excessive cost of patching. Memorial Square was also retarred, and three chains of Broadway had received a second coating. Two hundred nd fourteen chains of pathways had been retarred, and 23 chains of new pathway treated with tar. The roadway In Pembroke Street was sealed for a distance of 20 chains, and it was hoped if the weather was favourable to complete that work with a second coat before the winter. The general account showed a credit balance as at March 31, 1920, of £1252 9s. 6d., as against £1358 Is. for the year ended March 31, 1928,
