EKETAHUNA NOTES

Eketahuna, April 26. The statement of finances of the Tarawa Electric Power Board for the year ended March 31, 1929, states that the development rather exceeds expectation as regards revenue owing to extensions to the system, internal development and another , exceptional season of favourable weather and good markets for piimary produce. Loans raised amounted to £144,450 and advances to consumers £20,000, the unexercised balance of ratepayers’ authority being , f3o i b - O ;. Qr of electricity brought m £19,050 as against £16,859 for the previous year—an increase of 13.2 per cent The gross trading turnover was £27,537, as against £25,253 for the previous year. The net revenue account shows that apart from depreciation and the burden bequeathed by earlier years there is £lOB4 available on the year’s workings. The continued expenditure involved in strengthening the original line in order to carry the growing load seems endless and is somewhat disheartening. It defers the consideration of one or two desirable alterations in tariff. In the opinion of the management the balance-sheet discloses a fairly healthy position—a position not strong and entrenched, as it is too early to expect that —but having what is second only to this, a vitality that will respond in due measure to the capital expended. Writing managerially, safeguards will be taken to prevent a slipping backwards and to show an alertness to improve the position by creating circumstances rather than waiting for them to evolve is our ambition. Eketahuna, April 26. A special combined Anzac service was held in the Public Hall on Thursday. The Municipal Band supplied the music for the hymns and played the “Dead March in Saul.” The combined choirs led the singing. The Deputy Mayor. Mr. Grenthead, presided over the gathering. The address was given by the Rev. Watson, whilst the prayers and lesson were taken by the Rev. Baillie. Every seat in the hall was occupied. Owing to the milk supply falling off, the Rongomai factory is only dispatching cheese to the freezer every alternate week till the end of the season. Mr. Hay, of the Railway Department, has arrived to relieve the stationmaster, Mr. Kelleher, who is on holiday. Mr. Jory has taken up his new duties on the railway staff in place of Mr. Thomas, who has been transferred.
