PALMERSTON DEVIATION
QUESTION OF PROTEST Dominion Special -Service Palmerston North, April 20. A meeting of the Mayor (Mr. A., JGraham), Mr. J. A.'Nash, M.P., and the president of the Chamber of Commerce (Mr. M. H. Oram), was held this afternoon, when the advisability of calling a public meeting in connection with the suspension of activities at the Palmerston North deviation was discussed. No decision as to the course of action to be adopted in dealing with the matter was arrived at, and the meeting was adjourned to allow more information to be obtained. It is declared that convincing arguments can be advanced in refutation of certain statements made concerning the reasons which'actuated the discontinuance of the work, as it is. stated there are. some important aspects of the situation which have not been mentioned. One is that the cost of the present station site was to offset in a measure the cost of the deviation. Again there is the arrangement entered into with the Railway Department concerning the gasworks and other matters.■ ■
