CAN CAMELS SWIM?
Sir, —i have noticed that at least three times in the last month paragraphs in your paper have stated that the camel is one of the few known animals that cannot swim. There are at present in New Zealand about 250 ex-members of the New Zealand Branch of the Imperial Camel Corps. Whilst stationed in Palestine, on the Mediterranean, our camels were made to swim, daily. Of course persuasion was required to coax them into the water, but an instance can be quoted where a camel has entered the water as freely as any duck or duckling. This happened while ,we were stationed in the Suez Canal, when one of these animals decided to take charge, and in consequence was sent across the canal per pontoon in charge of one of our company. On reaching the other side of the canal this camel broke away from the attendant and without hesitation swam the canal and rejoined his companions on our side. So whoever states that camels cannot swim has another think coming.—I am. etc., • 15th N.Z.I.C.C. Wellington, April 19.
