FROM FAR AND NEAR Intoxicated Motorist.—Arthur McPhillips, of New Plymouth, was fined £25 on a charge of being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car, states a Stratford Press Association telegram. Accused’s car mounted the footpath and broke a shop window.
Novel Strike in Melbourne. —A novel strike occurred when the . builders’ labourers on the old Melbourne Gaol site, where excavations continue to unearth the remains of executed criminals, left the work, demanding 30s. a day, and that an undertaker shall remove the bones. These terms were agreed to. Over twenty skeletons have been dug up. Most of the graves were despoiled by souvenir hunters. —Press Assn.
New Zealanders Arrested in Sydney.— Ricarde de Silva or Daniel Sullivan and Douglas Slater, both New Zealanders, who were arrested at Sydney on provisional warrants, de Silva on a charge of forgery and Slater on a charge of theft of £43, were yesterday ordered to be returned to the Dominion states a Press Association message. ,
Presbyterian Manse Burnt. —The Presbyterian Manse at Bluff, occupied by the Rev. Waddell, was completely destroyed by fire yesterday aftertioon (states a Press Association message). Mr. Waddell and his family were present at the time. Practically nothing was saved from the building, and Mr. Waddell has sustained a serious loss. «
