PALMERSTON DEVIATION
CLEARING UP WELL IN HAND Palmerston North, April 19. The work of clearing up at the Palmerston North deviation is now well in hand. ■' This morning railway tracks were being torn up, power lines dismantled, water services disconnected and fences erected. In all, about eight miles of 551 b. track has to be torn up, and probably this will be stored at Longburn until it is required. Disposal of Men. It is now certain that ten men will proceed to Gisborne on Monday and by the end of next week 40 to 50 men will have ‘been transferred. The first to go will be the general labourers, who number over 150. Messrs. W. L. Bell (chief engineer), R. Hill (overseer), L. E. Earle (engineer’s assistant) and Patterson (costs clerk) have received instructions to proceed to Gisborne and take up duties on the Ea§t Coast railway construction works as soon as they are available. The transfer of Messrs. Speight (engineer’s assistant) and J. Gagliardi to the Mqrchisou line in the Nelson district is pending. The first members of the permanent staff are expected to take up their new positions in about 10 days’ time. The Rangltikei Line main road, which was reopened yesterday, has been closed for the last month, a deviation being necessary to allow work to proceed on the proposed overhead bridge. The deviation effected alongside was completed at considerable expense six weeks before the Goverhment decided to cease work.
