SPORTSMAN’S PRIZE

FIRST MOOSE HEAD SECURED IN NEW ZEALAND PERSISTENCE REWARDED By Telegraph.—Press Association, Invercargill, April 19. A sporting achievement of widespread interest is that of Mr. E. J. Herrick, of Hastings, who to-day returned to Invercargill from Dusky Sound with a moose head, the first ever secured in New Zealand. Five weeks ago Mr. Herrick and his party left in a ketch for Dusky Sound. On two previous occasions Mr. Herrick had set out in quest of a moose head and had returned without success. This time he was determined that he would get a head if it were possible, no matter how long it took him or what the difficulties were. It is stated that the only moose herd in the Southern Hemisphere is in the bush and mountain country around Dusky Sound. Last year Mr. Herrick sent out two expert guides from the Hawera country to prospect for moose, and they gave a favourable report. This year Mr. Herrick obtained permission to go into the country with the object of giving an authoritative report. He was conceded the right of taking a head should he see one of sufficiently good quality. The head which Mr. Herrick secured has been brought back to Invercargill and will be cleaned and mounted.
