ORDERED TO VACATE
TENANTS ON MILK STATION SITE 'When the City Council decided to erect a new milk station near Tory Street it became necessary that residents of certain streets should vacate their houses to make room for the new building. All the householders have moved with the exception of three, who, according to the city solicitor (Mr. J. O'Shea), must vacate their houses as soon as possible. Matters reached a climax recently, and the three residents were proceeded against on a charge of “wilfully trespassing on property and neglecting to leave such premises after being warned to do so by the City Council.” Their names were Emily Parker, of 15 Francis Place; Samuel Jones, of 13 Francis Place; and Thomas Atkinson, of 22 Alma Laue. When the case was heard before Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Mr. O’Shea stated that the defendants were the last of the occupants of the houses needed for the site of the new building. They had been given every possible warning to get out, and no rent had been collected from them since February of last year. Atkinson was not in employment, and had been receiving charitable aid for two years. Mrs. Parker had five children who could help her if they wished to, but apparently they would not do so. Jones, continued Mr. O’Shea, had since taken a house at the Hutt. Mr. O’Shea suggested that the cases might be adjourned for a fortnight in order to give the defendants a final cjiance to vacate the premises.
The Magistrate warned the defendants that they must leave their houses, and adjourned the eases for two weeks. “If you don’t go,” concluded Mr. Page, “I’ll have to take other steps.”
