MAGISTRATE’S COURT

POLICE AND SUMMONS CASES Police and summons cases in the Magistate’s Court yesterday were heard before Mr. E. Page, S.M. Kichard Cook, a fireman, who was charged with an eighth statutory offence of drunkenness, was fined £3, in default 14 days’ imprisonment. Senior-Sergeant Butler said that accused had eighteen previous convictions. Cook was also fined £l, in default seven days’ imprisonment, for a breach of his prohibition order. A sentence of two months’ imprisonment was imposed on James Perry Bice, a confectioner, aged 47, who was charged with being £34 in arrears’ on an order for his wife’s maintenance. The warrant is to be suspended so long as he pays 10s. a week.

A remand until Wednesday next was granted to Leslie Weir Gemmell, a plumber, aged 23, who was charged with breaking and entering by day the house of Mary Wylie, 24 Stoke Street, and stealing £23’lls. 3d., and keys valued at 10s. ( the property of Mary Wylie. Bail was allowed in the sum of £l5O, with one similar surety. Summons cases.

Paul Austin Elder was ordered to pay costs, 10s., for being in possession of an unregistered firearm. An Order was made for the forfeiture of the weapon. A fine of £2 and costs was imposed on H. Jervis and Sons, who were charged with selling milk below standard. It was stated that the milk contained twelve per cent, added water. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate said that defendants had a good record, and it was their contention that the water wasadded through misadventure. Care, however, must be-exercised. Adam Myles was ordered to pay costs only, 10s., for procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order. P. L. Brady and Co., Ltd. were fined 10s. arid costs for failing to close their shop at 9 p.m. on a Friday. C. H. L. Tucker, hgainst whom were two charges of failing to close his shop at the proper time, was fined £1 aijd costs on one charge, and 10s. and costs on the other.
