TICKS IN NELSON DISTRICT
SEARCH PROVES MOST REASSURING
Dominion Special Service. Nelson, March 2. Questioned to-day regarding the appearance of cattle tick on a farm in the Takaka district, Dr. Miller, Chief of the Biological Department of the Cawthron Institute, who identified the parasite, said everything that was humanly possible was being done by Mr. Blair, stock inspector, at NMson, and the Department of Agriculture, to grapple with the position. On the farm in question, despite thorough and repeated investigation, only four ticks have been discovered. With a view to destroying the parasites if harbouring in the ground, all roughage ou the farm has been burned, and all animals quarantined. The ticks were found on the milking cows, and no sign of tick infestation lias been seen since spraying operations were enforced. No cattle had been imported by the owner of the farm, or his near neighbours. The only possible carrier in these respects was a dog which came to the district from the North Island about a year ago, and was on the farm several times. As a precautionary measure, the Department is examining all herds in the adjacent districts. ‘
