THE RACING WORLD

WELLINGTON AUTUMN NOMINATIONS

NOTES AND COMMENTS

Notwithstanding the proximity of the Manawatu meeting, the Wellington Racing Club has received excellent entries for its autumn fixture, which is set down for March 16 «nd 18.

The Great Northern Derby winner, Red Heckle, is to race af Banks Peninsula on Saturday, after which he will compete in the New Zealand St. Leger at Trentham. He has not been entered for the Trentham Gohl Cup, but something to suit him might be found at Awapuni or at one of the bigger of the Easter meetings.

This year’s North Island Challenge Stakes should be an interesting race, the field including Reremoana, Gascony, Bright Glow, Commendation, Pink Coat, and The Hawk.

Nine entries have been received for the Trentham Gold Cup, and if Rapine, Rapier, and Nightmarch go to the post there will be no lack of interest.

Among the acceptors for the Australian Cup is No Favours, who is weighted at 7.4, which is 111 b. above the Australian minimum. This is a striking instance of no risk being taken with a New Zealander.

From a weight-carrying point of view Mollison’s performance in the Futurity Stakes was very creditable. His 9.3 included a 151 b. penalty.

Nightmarch has won £2690 in stakes. Of the 19 races he has contested he has won seven, been second in four, and third in one.

Glengariff, who has done well in hurdle races this season, continues to get through satisfactory work at Hawera, and is keeping his condition well.

Royal Acre does not appear to be any the worse for the slight knocking about he received at New Plymouth. He will be well supported next time he races.

W. H. Jones, who left New Zealand some time back to try his luck in Australia, has been in Queensland a while, but npw proposes to settle in Sydney.

Aussie’s stake winnings have been worked out at £6280 from fifteen firsts, five seconds, and three thirds.

The crack Victorian jockey, W. Duncan. whose license was withdrawn a while back has since been refused a renewal till the end of the season at least.

W. Lippingwell, J. Brown’s apprentice, who sustained slight concussion when Camphos fell at Hawera, was more seriously hurt than at first was thought. He is still an inmate of the Hawera Hospital, but on latest inquiry was reported to be doing well now, and may be able to leave the institution next week.

Hitherto classed as a .very badly-be-haved performer at the barrier, Lucky Light has apparently mended her ways since she came to Invercargill from Napier to the care of F. J. McKay, who has a way with him where erratic and highly-strung thoroughbreds are concerned (writes Sir Modred). With her trainer in the saddle in her starts on each day of the Gore Racing Club fixture. Lucky Light stood up to the barrier in a very encouraging fashion, and on Thursday, in the Hokonui Hack Handicap she waited flat-footed like an equine statue for the tapes to release an eager field. Should she continue in her new role of a wellbehaved contestant, Lucky Light will some day justify her fashionable pedigree.

The retirement of Eaton Bells to the stud was announced some time ago, but the Queensland-bred daughter of the successful English sire, Eaton Lad, failed to produce and has now come back to the racing game as solid a proposition as ever, according to an Invercargill paper. She was noticed running well during the recent Dunedin Jockey Club autumn fixture, and at Gore she finished up a elose third to Wingatui and Martis in the Croydon Handicap, a fact which prepared many observant backers for her triumph in the Borough Handicap over a similar distance of three-quarters of a mile.

A dense fog prevented the accurate timing of horses galloped at Hawera before breakfast on Friday (says the “Star”). Bisox and Calyx were timed to run their five furlongs in Imin. Csee., wiih the mare in front at the finish. The Callaghan— Compel mare in J. Fryer’s stable, and Stair ran a half-mile in 51}sec. Glengariff put plenty of life into his two

rounds of paee work and is retaining his condition. Airway and Gasnapper were restricted to half-pace work, and both look in first-class racing condition. Benzora took a lot of lestraining in his work, doing about twice as much as required. I’artaga did a couple of rounds of useful pace work and will soon be at bis best. Royal Acre and Grand Marnia rattled over three furiongs fast, Royal Acre finishing in front of the two-year-old. Reremoana went two rounds at half-pace, similar work being allotted Valpre, Fortalice and Airtight. Orazone and Banbridge did working gallops and a number of horses were given easy exercise. Pikimai is a vastly-im-proved looking horse since Martin Conway has had him. and should do owner and trainer good service when the steeplechasing season comes round._ Tenacre has got over his soreness, and is out again doing regular work. Llanore looks in splendid order and revels in her pace work.

It is reported from Melbourne that the crack three-year-old colt Strephon will not be a starter in the Australian Cup, but will bo kept in reserve for the V.R.C. St. Leger, an event hts owner, Mr. Sol Green, is very anxious to win with the descendant of Saltash and Soldier’s Love.

The Australian turf lias been graced by many noted stayers during the past thirty years, but few left such an impression on the minds of racegoers as did Trafalgar, who had to be destroyed recently, owing to breaking a leg. Probably the greatest idol of his day was Carbine, says a Sydney writer, and the next was Trafalgar, who was as honest as his famous grandsire. Bred by his owners,' Messrs. P. and W. Mitchell, in 1905, he was by Wallace from Grand Canary. by imported Splendor. He started in fifty-nine races, winning twenty-four, while he was second eleven times and third six times, his stake earnings being £22,111. Like many horses destined to become stayers, Trafalgar did nothing as a two-year-old; In fact, he started only once at that age, being unplaced in a handicap at Caulfield. But from threo or seven years he became famous as one of the grandest stayers that ever looked through a bridle, his victories including the V.R.C. Loch Plate (twice), A..T.C. Autumn Stakes (twice), Sydney Cup, A.J.C. Plate (three times), Spring Stakes, Randw’ick Plate (four times), V.R.C. Champion Stakes (twice), A.J.C. Cumberland Stakes (twice), S.A.J.C. Elder Stakes, V.R.C. Melbourne Stakes, C. B. Fisher Plate, V.A.T.C. St. George Stakes, and V.R.C. Essendon Stakes; while he ran second to Comedy King In the Melbourne Cup of 1910, a race which many people considered he should have won. At the stud, Trafalgar, who looked more like a gelding than a stallion, was not a success, none of his offspring being within cooee of him as a racehorse.

Mervette's defeat in the President's Handicap at Rotorua was not what most people expected, but subsequent happenings have indicated that all was far from being right with her physically (says a Waikato writer). In the work-outs the daughter of Lncullns and Brayton had at her headquarters following her return, there was an absence of that dash which was present earlier in the season, and which supplied her w-lth the ability to win five races on end inside about a month, viz., three at Te Kulti and two at Auckland in the summer. Her trainer, A. Tinker, decided that it was futile asking Mervette to race at Te Aroha under the circumstances, and she went on the spelling list a couple of days prior to that meeting. It may take Mervette some time to build up again to her best physical trim, and she is Inclined to be of the delicate type constitutionally. Probably it will be round about the winter racing before we find her as capable as she was during December and January.

An Auckland writer draws attention to Taurua, a full brother to Te Monanui, who was seen in action in the two-year-old events at Te Aroha. Although never prominent, he has the makings of a smart youngster, if appearances count for anything. It will be remembered that it was a good itme before Te Monanui came right, and the same backwardness may be in evidence in Taurua's case. The colt races In the colours of the Hinuera sportsman, Mr. W. C. Ring. Another well bred youngster in the same fields last week-end was Motere, by Lord Quex from Lovematch, and a full brother to Liaison. The two-year-old races in the colours of Messrs. EL Pharazyn and M. Greenwood.

Mr. J. E. Brien has decided to dispose of the whole of his racehorses in training in consequence of the recent death of his son. The list includes Fcrnkloof, recently imported by Messrs. .T. E. and the late C. H. Brien, who bought him at auction in England for 5000 guineas. Fernkloof, who ran fourth in the last Derby, is a splendid-looking brown horse by Alan Breck from Cornelia, by St. Frusquln, and has made a very favourable impression among critics at Randwick, where ho has been doing slow work preparatory to active racing here. Rampion, one of the best horses Australia has seen in recent years, will be offered as a stallion. He has furnished into a splendidlooking horse, and bears a marked resemblance to his great sire. Among Mr. Brien's horses in training are Ramulus, the A.J.C. Breeders’ Plate and V.R.C. Batman Stakes winner: the well-known three-year-old fillies, Panola and Remora, each of whom has winning form to recommend her; nnd the two-year-olds, Rallier, by Rossendale (imp.)—Desna (imp.), who Is being allowed to develop; Raconda, a chestnut filly by Rossendale (imp.) from Pansy (imp.), and therefore a sister to the Wellington Cup winner, Vertigern; Pavonian, a good-looking youngster by imported Orby’s Pride from Helianthus (imp.), who is also being allowed time to mature; and Rational, a chestnut colt by Rossendale (imi>.), from Sundream (imp).

The Caulfield Futurity Stakes, won by Mollison on Saturday, with Gothic second. holds a place with the most valuable welght-for-nge races of the Australian turf. A perusal of the records attached to the race show that English-bred horses have played the leading part on quite a number of occasions, nine victories being

MANAWATU TROTTING CUP

PRESIDENT DONATES TROPHY.

For many years past the Manawatu Trotting Club has been fortunate enough to have been in a position to award a cup to the winner of the principal event at Its annual fixture, the well-known southern mentor, Mr. J. K. McKenzie, having been the donor last year. However, it had appeared that a repetition of such a happy state of affairs would not be forthcoming this- year, and, following upon the allocation of prize money having been determined, the committee consider,ed the question once again. The committee was, however, forestalled by President W. Mouldey. who announced his intention of donating a trophy which takes the form of an afternoon tea service of four pieces—silver teapot, milk and sugar containers, and hot water jug—together .glth oak tray,
