FREEDOM FROM OFFICE

EX-PRIME MINISTER ON HIS FARM

Dominion Special Service.

Christchurch, February 14.

“How do you like being a farmer again?” was a question put to the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, Leader of the Opposition and former Prime Minister, this morning, shortly after his arrival from Wellington to take part in the ceremony to mark the opening of the electric train service on the Christ-church-Lyttelton line. Mr. Coates, who was looking bronzed and fit, replied that he had been a farmer all his life, and during the past couple of months had been looking after his farm and certain commercial interests. He admitted that he had done a bit' of harvesting this year. The ex-Premier declined to be drawn into a. discussion dn politics, stating that he had not come to Christchurch for that purpose. He said he was glad to visit Christchurch again and to meet old friends, but his stay would be a short one as he intended to leave by the ferry steamer to-night on his return to the North Island.
