OUTLAY ON PUBLICITY

IS EXPENSE JUSTIFIED? There have recently been complaints in various newspapers of the Dominion of the expenditure by the Government Publicity Department and what seems to be the small return for the. money expended. Last year approximately £30,000 was spent, and some 8000 tourists visited the country. A retired accountant and bank manager in Gisborne, however, can see no grounds whatever for these complaints. In a letter written to the Publicity Department he states that on the contrary they have every reason to consider that they have done remarkably well. The average expenditure of each of the 8000 tourists, he states, ranged between £lOO and £l5O, so that the money spent by them in the country was roughly £1,000,000, surely no mean return for the amount expended.
