NEW WORKER TO TAKE UP DUTIES The extended term of restriction placed on the flow of assisted migration to New Zealand expired on December 31 last, and it is anticipated that the policy the new Government will adopt in the matter will be formulated by Cabinet at an early date. Owing to economic depression, the Coates Government some eighteen months ago decided that until conditions improved assisted immigrants from the United I£jigdom would have to be confined to domestics and members of separated families, and on several occasions the period of that restriction was extended. The new Minister of Immigration is the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, and when last the matter was brought under his notice by a\“Dominion” representative he replied that so far he had not had an opportunity of considering the position. It is expected that when the matter comes before Cabinet the Government will decide to continue the present arrangement until the end at least of the current financial year. Negotiations are now in progress for a renewal of the existing agreement between the New Zealand and the Imperial Governments governing the Empire settlement scheme, and the expectation is that the matter will be finalised shortly.
