TRANSFER OF RAILWAY STAFF
NEW WORKSHOPS AT DUNEDIN Dominion Special Service.Dunedin, January 11. When the Hillside railway workshops are completed under the reorgananised scheme, there will be approximately 800 men employed there, and a “Star” reporter was informed today by a railway officer, that the houses for Christchurch and Invercargill men on transfer to Dunedin are now well under way. At the moment 13 houses are under construction. One has been completed and is already occupied, and during the next few months the number of houses to be constructed in Dunedin and the suburbs will be brought to a total of 40. The new buildings at the workshops are being constructed so that their advance synchronises with the erection of the houses. As soon as these are ready for occupation, the men arc transferred here. No hitch has occurred as regards the reorganisation, so far everything having worked up to the schedue as planned by the departmental officers. Other men, who have rented houses in Christchurch, are being transferred here as the need arises for them, and houses are being found for them here.
The new moulding shop running alongside Cargill Road is now under construction, and the roof and .sides should be erected in the course of a few days. All the houses for the transferred railwaymen are expected to be finished by May, and very shortly after that the majority of the men from Cluiistchurch and Invercargill will be absorbed here. The new din-ing-rooms are practically finished and will be opened during the next few weeks, while the new library under the supervision of Mr. Dyer, is already being largely patronised. It is the largest private library of its kind in New Zealand.
