FROM FAR AND NEAR Serbian Cabinet Resigns.—An Austranian Press Associatiou United Service message from V ienna states that owing to an understanding between the Democratic Party aud the Croat Peasant Party the Serbian Cabinet has resigned. The Morinda Refloated.—The stranded steamer Morinua, after being aground at Dedele for sixteen days, has been refloated. After survey at Port Moresby, the vessel returns to Sydney for docking.—Press Assn. Chinese Murdered. —A message from Gulargambone, New Sodth Wales, states that Lee Leu, aged 44, a Chinese gardener, was murdered at his home. An aborigine found the body with a portion of the head blown away. It is believed that Len was killed at short range with a shotgun. The dead man’s partner has been arrested. Gulargambone is a northwestern town near Nyngan.—Press Assn.' Woman Charged With Larceny.—Mrs. Theodore Alvares, an Australian, who said she was the wife of an Argentine millionaire, was arrested iir an exclusive hotel and charged with grand larceny for presenting a worthless cheque for 1115 dollars at a clothing shop, states an Australian Press Association message from New York. The woman is said to have served a term in Canada on a similar charge. Bank Teller Charged With Embezzle, ment. —Aubrey Holt, 28 years of age, a teller of the Bank of New South Wales, was arrested in Perth on a charge of embezzling £595 from'his bank. He confessed to having lost the money on racing in Sydney. He surrendered to the Perth Police, saying he intended to commit suicide, but changed ’ his mind.— Press Assn. Prize in Spanish Lottery.—The Paris “Journal” states that a half-share in the Spanish lottery prize was held jointly by General Primo De Rivera, Duke Le Alba, and Senor Leon, Spanish Ambassador at Paris. These three men were dining at a Madrid hotel last summer when they discussed the lottery, and then dispatched a groom to buy a half-ticket. —Australian Press Assn. Frauds on Perth Shopkeepers.—Large frauds have been perpetrated on Perth shopkeepers during the holidays by means of bogus cash orders purporting to be issued by the Public Works Department. Small purchases were made, and occasionally a large amount of cash change was received. It is estimated that a sum of at least £l2OO was fraudulently obtained. —Press Assn. Girl Four Days Without Food.—Jean Forbes, aged 13, who had been missing from her home at Tuatapere since Wednesday last, appeared from an unused loft in a stable on an adjoining farm at noon yesterday, states a Press Association message from Invercargill. It is understood' that she had spent four days and nights in the loft without food. She was found in a weak condition, and suffering from mental strain. Christchurch Building Permits.—The total value of the building permits issued by the Christchurch City Council during the past year was £671,845 compared with £654,817 in 1927. Permits were issued for 536 dwellings, compared with 541 for the previous year.—“ Dominion” Special Communists to Oppose Labourites.— The Communist conference in Sydney endorsed the proposal that Communist candidates should oppose Labour candidates at the forthcoming election in Queensland. An attempt will probably be made to form a left wing of the Labour Party composed of dissatisfied elements in the present Labour Party.— Press Assn.
Man’s Injuries to Woman and Kills Himself.—Thomas Arblaster, aged 56, a dairyman, on Saturday wished his housekeeper, Margaret Smith, aged 52, a happy New Year, and then fired a revolver, wounding her iu the neck- and shoulder, states a Press Association message from Melbourne. He then turned the weapon on himself and fell dead. The motive has not been disclosed, but it is believed that the woman refused to marry him.
