MAGISTRATE’S COURT
POLICE CASES Mr. J. H. Salmon.. S.M., dealt with police cases in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. George Broek Aaron Ferguson admitted stealing £39 in money, at Wanganui, the property of William O'Halloran. Chief Detective Ward explained that O’HallOran, under the influence of liquor, went and slept in the room of accused, by mistake for his own, in a boardinghouse at Wanganui. O’Halloran, who was drunk at the time, said that about £45 had beeu taken, but accused stated that thefo was only £39. On this point the police were prepared to accept his word. Accused, who had a list of previous convictions, including one for theft, for .which he served a term of two lind a half years’ imprisonment, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. An order was made that the money which was found on Ferguson when arrested, be fttfifhed to its rightful owner. A charge of vagrancy which had been preferred against accused, was withdrawn. A remand until January 2 was granted in the case of Thomas Richard Chamberlain. a labourer, aged 38, who was charged with committing incest. Thomas Pauling, a labourer, aged 34, was remanded until Friday oh a charge of being found in a state of helpless drunkenness. ... George Arthur Gibbs, a boilermaker, aged 43, was remanded for a week on a similar charge, in Order that he coqfd be given curative treatnient. John Farley, a seaman, aged 21, was fined £2, in default 14 days’ imprisonment, for his third offence of drunknOhess. Accused had six previous convictions.
