UAUSE OF YOUTH’S JUMP FROM MAST

The Coroner (Mr. E. Page, S.M.) presided over an inquest held yesterday to inquire into the death of Melville Wood, aged 18, who was killed on Wednesday evening through jumping from a mast of the Wellington wireless brpadeasting station (2YA) on Mount Victoria.

Dr. A. Tennent stated that he had examined the deecased during the morning of the day of the occurrence, and as a result of this had told the hoys’ parents that he was on the verge of a mental breakdown. Deceased’s father said that his son was interested in athletics, and on the evening of his death got up from his bed and said that he was going for a run.

Evidence was given by an eyewitness, who said that he saw deceased climbing the mast. When near the top he was holding on with oue hand. He looked down over the wireless station and then stepped off. “This tragic death was due to a condition of mental depression, brought about by an attack of meningitis,” said the Coroner, whose finding was to the effect that deceased died from injuries received through jumping from a wireless inast while in a state of extreme mental depression, caused by an attack of meningitis.
