Matters in connection with the establishment of an improved steamer service between Melbourne, Hobart, and southern ports of New Zealand were further discussed at the executive meeting of the Chamber of Commerce recently (states the “Otago Daily Times”). Mr. J. M. Fisher, of Hobart, who is at present visiting the Dominion as a representative of the Tasmanian Government, _ was present, and detailed the steps being taken by that State. It is expected .that a deputation from various bodies in the South Island will wait upon the Prime Minister (Sir Joseh Ward) towards the end of January, when it is confidently hoped that something of a definite, nature will be arranged, and that before long a much improved service will be established. Though the whitebait season is almost over, small supplies are still coming to hand in Christchurch, and will continue to do so, it is expected until Christmas (says the “Sun”).
