When Lt.-Col; Pearless returned from the South African war 28 years ago he brought with him a Mauser carbine with a brass plate on hte butt, inscribed “P.J.P.” After his death this rifle was given to Mr. W. 11. Bryant. Last March a Cape “Times” passed into the latter's hands and he noticed therein an account of a public meeting at the Cape at which one of the speakers was P. J. Pienaar. The similarity of initials at once caught the eye. A description of the rifle and a sketch of the engraved plate was sent to the editor of the “Times,” with a request that he would forward the letter to Mr. Pienaar. When Nelson’s All Black, Mr. E. Snow was in South Africa (says the Nelson “Mail”) Mr. Pienaar hunted him up and expressed the keenest desire to get his old rifle back, for it was his. The maker of the plate was _ also alive and well, and was equally interested Mr. Pienaar was captured by our men in the Boer War. The rifle has been posted to its former owner as a Christmas present “with kindest wishes. It mav be added that Mr. Pienaar did all he "could to make it pleasant for New Zealand footballers on their recent tour.

A 10ft. shark, caught at Lang’s Beach, Waipu. by a party of fishermen, was landed in a peculiar manner recently (states the “New Zealand Herald’s” IVhangarei correspondent). The shark seized the sinker of a light schnapper line and severed that portion of the line, but one of the hooks got caught in one of the shark’s fins. In trying to free itself the shark got the line prapped round it and was so hampered that the fishermen were able to draw it near the surface. The shark was secured with a boat-hook and finally despatched with a hammer. Upon examination it was found that a large rusty hook was securely fastened in tiie shark’s upper jaw and judging by the corroded appearance had evidently been there for some time.
