PARCELS POST

QUESTION OE LIABILITY.

Questions arose at the last meeting of the Council of the .Wellington. Chamber of Commerce regarding the liability of the Post Office for damage suffered by parcels during transit. It is now stated that ordinary parcels are forwarded in bags, a very low rate being charged for such parcels. For those who desire more careful handling there is the opportunity to pay a “fragile” fee when the parcel will be forwarded in a hamper, and the possibility then of damage is very slight. Though every care is taken by the postal officers through whoso hands a parcel passes, the frequent handlings before the parcel reaches its destination make it impossible to avoid occasional damage if the packing be defective. The postal authorities in respect of an uninsured parcel, provided the special “fragile" fee has been paid, accept a measure of liability, and in the event of damage to a parcel occurring during transit, may pay to \ the owner compensation not exceeding £2 sterling. The council agreed that business houses should be made better acquainted with these provisions.
