Fatal Train Derailment.—A train from the sugar mills was derailed near Cairns,. Queensland, and two trucks capsized. AVilliam Lloyd and AVilllam AValsh were killed.—Press Assn.

Industrial Disputes In Australia. — Official Commonwealth figures show that sixty industrial disputes involving 20,959 workers were recorded during the quarter ended June 30 last. The men lost 178,321 working days and £173,262 in wages.—Press Assn.

Lord Inverclyde Granted Decree Nisi.—Lord Inverclyde was granted a decree nisi on the grounds of his wife's misconduct (states an Australian Press Association message from London). Lord Inverclyde, the fourth baron of the title, was born in 1597, and succeeded to his father in 1919. He married in 1926 Miss Olive Sylvia Sainsbury, of Gloucester House, Park Lane. There is no heir.

Lost Fishing Party.— The.fishing boat which contained the four missing men G. Hurley, A. Thompson, W. Richards, and R. AVaddleton, who left Rosebud on Sunday morning, was found on the rocks at Bluff Point with the boards stove in (states a Press Association message from Melbourne). A search for the bodies is proceeding.

Revenue Frotn Betting Duty.—A British Official AVireless message from Rugby states that the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, Mr. A. M. Samuel, stated in Parliament that the approximate amount derived from the betting duty during the year ending October 31 last was £2,279,000.

Condemned Chinaman’s Appeal Dismissed.—The appeal of the Chinese Chung Yi Miao against the sentence of death passed on him on conviction for the murder of his wife at Barrowdale, in the Lake District, on June 19, was dismissed by the Court of Criminal Appeal.—Aus. Press Assn.

Eight Men Missing In Motor Boat. —A Press Association message from Adelaide states that eight men are missing in a motor-boat, which left Point Davis on Saturday night for a trip to the gulf. The party included a father and two sons named Gadd.

Impostor Sent to Prison.— A sentence of two months’ imprisonment was imposed in the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court yesterday upon Frederick Trenowath, aged 28, for theft and obtaining credit by fraud. Posing as a nephew of the late Mr. Justice Cooper, he had incurred a board bill of £6. He had three previous convictions. The prisoner had agreed to make restitution from £3OO which he had in the Public Trust Office.—Press Assn.

Guilty of Theft.—ln the Supreme Court at Gisborne yesterday a Spaniard named Martin Lopez was found guilty of the theft of £3O from a man in from the country. Lopez (states a Press Association telegram) was sentenced to one. year’s hard labour.

Echo of Wartune Execution— An Australian Press Association message from London states that an echo of the wartime execution of Sir Roger Casement for assisting to land arms in Ireland is contained in a Gazette notification that Midshipman Roger Casement has changed his Christian name to Roddie.

London’s Night Clubs.— Lord Byng’s initial act as Metropolitan Police Commissioner is to declare war on the London night clubs. The “Daily Express” understands that Lord Byng expressed amazement at the looseness prevailing. It is significant that many night clubs where drinking and gambling continued till daybreak have already suddenly closed.—Aus. Press Assn. Roman Catholic College for Malta.— An Australian Press Association —United Service message from Malta states that there is much rejoicing at Lady Strickland’s promise of £5OOO yearly during her life, and £lOO,OOO under her will for the establishment of a Roman Catholic college for boys run on English lines. Lady Strickland is the widow of the late Governor of Malta. Argentine Training Ship at Portsmouth.—A British Official Wireless message states that the First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr. W. C. Bridgeman, accompanied by Rear-Admiral Fullerton, went to Portsmouth to-day to visit the Argentine training ship Presidents Sarmiento. The Argentine Ambassador was also in the party. The First Lord was very much interested in all he saw, and particularly in the exhibition of sail drill by .cadets. Young Man’s Lapse.—Allen Edward Tubman, aged 20, who was charged with fraudulently stating that he had posted a letter containing money, whereas, in fact, he had not posted it,. appeared for sentence in the Supreme Court at Invercargill. Tubman had purchased a motor-cycle on a hire purchase agreement, and as he was unable to pay the instalments on it, he claimed to have posted an amount when he ; had not done so. Accused was sentenced to twelve months in a Borstal institution—Press Assn. Girl Charged With Administering Poison—A girl aged sixteen was remanded in the Children’s Court at Adelaide on a charge of having attempted to murder Matthew Kennedy and Amelia Kennedy by administering poison (states a Press Association message). The girl had been in the employ of the Kennedys, and while she was pouring out tea, Kennedy noticed that the tea had a dark colour. A green sediment was found in the teapot Sentenced to Death.— William Carr, aged 25, was sentenced to death for the murder at Wonthaggi on September 20, of Margherita Williams, who was found with her throat cut in a house in which Carr was a boarder. —Press Assn.
