NEWS AND NOTES OF INTEREST. A man named William Bassett, about 62 years of age, who resided in Liverpool Road, ..Trentham. died suddenly yesterday morning on the train between Trentham and Lower Hutt. As the grass has never grown overluxuriantly undei- the pohutakawas at Courtenay Place, half the reserve has been dug-up and lilid down in the form of rockery beds. To make this effective, big boulders have been brought in from the Lyall Bay beach, and between these stones suitable plants have been bedded-ln. This gives quite a picturesque effect to an area which was formerly senii-dentided of grass, due in part to the encroachments of the public, now rendered next to an impossibility. ’

At a special meeting of the City Council yesterday afternoon, a resolution was passed confirming the decision to raise £lO.OOO for unemployment . relief works. ■ This amount, with the Government subsidy, Is to be expended ou the levelling and claying of some 40 acres of sand-dune land on the Lyall Bay reserve that Is to serve the city as an airport. In the absence of the Mayor, the . chair was occupied by Mr. M. Luckie, senior councillor.

In addition to the receht remodelling of the schoolrooms at the .Lyall, Bay school, the Minister of Education (Hon. R. A. Wright) has intimated to Mr. T. Forsyth, M.P., that he lias approved of a grant for the extension of the teachers’ room at the same School.

Thursday’s gale did not stop men from attending. Miss M. Castle’s concert for seafarers at The Sailors’ Friend Society. The warmth of the reception was a big contrast to. the chill outside. Light refreshments, gave the home touch to the proceedings. The performers were the Misses Mona Castle, Boesley, Mavis Castle, Clarice Read, Lily Riach, Zillah Castle. Miss Boesley was at the piano. Yet again the competitions filled an amusing place in the bill. The prizes came from The Terrace and the hostess, and went to the men in port.

‘ A very pleasant evening was Spent by a large number of seamen at the rooms of the British Sailors’ Society on Wednesday, despite the bad weather. A concert of outstanding merit was given by Mrs. Ethel Hardie’s Entertainers and each item was greeted with rounds of applause, aiid encore after encore was demanded and given again and again. The singing of little Zeta Hardie- and Ila and Hazel Wright was of outstanding, merit. A hearty vote of thanks was proposed by the chairman of the entertainment committee and was carried by acclamation. Mrs. Hardie responded on behalf of the entertainers. Supper was served by the workers, and a very pleasant evening was brought to a close by the singing of the National Anthem. Items were contributed by Mesdames Metcalf and Hardie, Misses J. Edlin, Zeta Hardie, Ila and Hazel Wright; Messrs. Turner, Marshell, Sakey, N. Edlin, St. John, L. Bevan and Len Mitehell. Mesdames Metcalf and Hardie were the accompanists for the evening.
