AN “OLD MAN” SOUTHERLY
RETURN TO MID-WINTER CONDITIONS
“This spring is the worst winter we have had,” said an Irish policeman to a local pressman yesterday, and, throwing the bull in, he was not far out. In July Wellington enjoyed some weeks of delightfully mild sunny weather, but there have not been many days during the last two months when it was more unwelcome. For the last two days Wellington has been in the grip of a real “Old Man” Southerly gale, accompanied by driving rain and a degree of cold that would not disgrace Siberia. The continuous rain is holding up the street paving and all other outside work, and is having a blighting effect on the gardens. SHIPPING DELAYED. The southerly gale and continuous rain at Wellington yesterday seriously delayed shipping in port. Practically no cargo could be worked, and the departure of several vessels had to be postponed until to-day.
