FROM FAR AND NEAR -Earl Divorced— The Countess of Northesk has secured a divorce at Edinburgh on the grounds of the Earl of Northesk’s misconduct. The case was not defended. —United Service.
Fiji Stevedore Killed.—A Fijian stevedore in the steamer Ravenscar was killed by a falling bag of sugar in Suva harbour. —Press Assn.
Indian Murdered in Fiji.— An Indian was murdered in the Ba district, states a Press Association message from Suva. His son was arrested and charged with inurdeij.
American Press Bureau in Paris.— An official has arrived at Paris from Washington to open a press bureau. He stated that if successful the American Government would open similar offices in London, Berlin and Tokio.— Aus. Press Assn.
Deatli of Cologne Bandit.—An Australian Press Association-United Service message states that the Cologne bandit, Johann Heidger, fatally wounded in a last fight with the police, while resisting arrest, died in hospital. He took the Last Sacrament.
An Unnatural Mother.—Martha Serivens was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment at Nuneaton for neglecting her children aged S and 4, states a United Service message. She went to Banbury Fair and left them foodless and tireless until late at night. She then sold the eldest for a half-pint of beer to a caravan dweller, and tried to give the youngest away.
Grim Gun Fight.— The Perth police obtained a statement from Thomas Smith, arrested at Dwellingup on a charge of shooting John Ibbott, a local butcher, in what was described as a grim gun fight. Smith states that his employer Ibbott refused to pay him his wages. A dispute occurred. Ibbott attempted to reach for a rifle. Smith snatched another rifle and shot Ibbott in self-defence.—Press Assn.
