MAGISTRATE’S COURT

SATURDAYS POLICE CASES. Police cases in the Magistrate’s Court on Saturday were heard before Mr. E. Page, S.M. Andrew Anderson, a cook, 55, who was discharged from gaol on the second of this month, was charged with being found without lawful excuse in a shed on the King’s Wharf. He was convicted, and ordered to come up for sentence within twelve months if called upon. A plea of not guilty was entered by Andrew McDonald, aged 40. who was charged with being an idle and disorderly person in that he placed himself in Mercer Street for the purpose of begging alms. Evidence was given by a man who had been accosted by accused, who denied that be had accosted anyone. Sub-Inspec-tor Lander said that accused had a list of four previous convictions. A sentence of twenty-one days’ imprisonment was imposed. A remand until November 2 was granted to John White, a labourer, aged 28. who was charged with breaking and entering by day the house of Ivy Marie McArthur, 1 Grosvenor Terrace, and stealing therefrom jewellery, a gold watch, and fiv quart milk tokens, to a total value of about £O7. Mr. R. Hardie Boys intimated that a plea of not guilty would be entered, and asked for bail. Chief-Detec-tive Ward said that White was not accused’s real name. Bail was allowed in the sum of £5OO.
