HENLEY-ON-YARRA

WANGANUI UNION CREW WINS STEWARDS’ CHALLENGE CUP MELBOURNE BOAT USED (Rec. October 28, 5.5 p.m.) Melbourne, October 28. The Wanganui Union crew's racing boat was damaged beyond repair on arrival at Melbourne. The boat was undamaged at Sydney, but appears to have received a heavy knock at the coxswain’s scyit, which broke the back of the boat and badly splintered it fore and aft. The crew used a Melbourne Club’s boat, which was satisfactory, in the Henley Regatta. In the first heat of the Stewards’ Challenge Cup Wanganui Union defeated Albert Park by four lengths, and in the final the New Zealand crew was first and Rutherglen second. The New Zealanders won by three lengths. The Wanganui Union were never troubled in the heat or the final, leading from the start. The powerful leg drive and easy body recovery contributed largely to the pace., Critics were favourably impressed with the crew. This was New Zealand’s third successive win in the Stewards’ Challenge Cup. Healey, the Wanganui stroke, expressed gratification with the success.

The weather was somewhat showery. Mosman (Sydney) won the senior eights from the Mercantiles.
