“OUTBOARD” RACING AND SANDERS CUP
FOSTERING BOTH SPORTS WELLINGTON PROPOSALS At the Wellington Provincial Yacht and Motor Boat Association meeting last night, Mr. J. B. Webb, a delegate from the newly affiliated Port Nicholson Motor Boat Club, asked permission for the club to hold an interprovincial championship for B class motored outboard racing craft. He did not know whether there was any definite governing body for outboard racing, but was applying through the association. Mr B. J. L. Jukes said that they wanted Wellington to get in first. They should support the movement as it was an aquatic sport. With Sanders Cup. Mr. F. Kiernan stressed the value to the association of outboard contests in rousing public interest. The association should support the movement. He suggested that the contest, which would become an annual one, should be run m conjunction with the Sanders Gup sailin*’’ contest. The outboard races could be held in between the Sanders Cup races. It would cost very little to send an outboard down to Akaroa, if the Sanders Cup were held there this year. It was a one-man job, and the motor could be packed'in n portmanteau, this would help in a great way in arousing interest in the Sanders Cup. Mr. Webb said a trophy had been promised from America, niid it was the desire of the donor for it to become an niterprovincial annual cup for "B class motors, American rating. No club had control of the sport so far. and a governing body was needed. His club would sponsor’the contest. , Mr. L. Smith said there were 1< outboard boats in Wellington nt the present time, but a number approaching -40 was mentioned for the end of the season. Question of Expense. The chairman (Mr. W. Moffat) stated that other clubs and associations should be communicated with. This year if the Sanders Cup were held at Akaroa aud the Cornwall Cup at Auckland, the holding of the outboard contest at Akaroa would greatly cut down expense. The event, however, should be raced in Wellington for the first time, as it was a Wellington man who donated the cup. Mr. Webb said several cups were already promised for outboard events. Wellington Cup Given. Mr. W. B. Giiijlers, a Paremata Club delegate, announced that a cup had been given for the Wellington provincial "B” class outboards. .f The donor stipulated that the race be sailed at Pnremata during the Easter regatta. It would be a scratch event, limits lending up to a final. As an outboard course Paremata was ideal, conditions being always favourable for outboards. Attention was drawn to the announcement in a northern aquatic paper that Russell club proposed to hold a New Zealand championship outboard event, Wellington Suggested Venue. Mr. Jukes suggested a committee be set up to investigate the rules governing outboard racing. Mr. E. J. Wilson, secretary, said that were the championship held in Wellington the delegates to a meeting to be held in conjunction with the race could draw up rules as in the Sanders Cup events. It was decided that the secretary write to all other associations informing them that the Wellington association had been presented with a cup for "B” class engined outboard class. American rating, this to be competed for on January 22. Anniversary Day Regatta on Wellington harbour, ns an interprovincial championship. Associations are requested to appoint delegates to attend a conference to be held in conjunction with the race for the purpose of defining outboard racing rules to apply throughout New Zealand.
