AMATEUR THEATRICALS

ANNUAL MEETING OF SOCIETY.

Mr. H. A. Huggins presided at the annual meeting of the Wellington Amateur Theatrical Society, held in the J timers Institute buildings last evening. After congratulating the society on its sound financial position, the annual report of the committee, said: ‘ lhe Belle of New York’ season was a credit to all concerned. The fact that ‘The Belle • was produced in three weeks, and with such success, speakers for itself, and the excellence of the work of principals, chorus, and ballets thoroughly deserved the praise of all who witnessed the performances. Besides expressing their appreciation of the good work of the performers, the committee feel that special mention and thanks are due to the following: Mr Lester Brown (producer). Mr. Leu Larnes (musical director). Miss Lennie (accompanist)/ Miss Grace .MacDonald (ballet mistress), Mr. W. Jameson (treasurer), Mr.-Hee. Liardet (stage manager), Mr. R. Robertson (property master), Mrs. D. Brown (wardrobe mistress), and her assistants, Mrs. Townshend and Mrs. Jameson,‘‘Messrs; Huggins, McAlister, line, and McArthur (finance committee), Messrs. Hinge and Vine (auditors). The committee alsb desire to thank specially Messrs. J. F. Woodward, J. L. Jackson, and A. McMasters, of the orchestra, who gave their services free; those who assisted in front of the house staff without charge to the society; and the member of the committee who provided a room for committee meetings without charge to thb society. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance at the bank of £331 19s. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, the Right Hon. J. G. Coates; president, Mr. C. A. L. J. readwell; vice-presidents, Messrs. L. A. Batt, J. J. Esson, M. Marks, C. C. Webb. J. F. Woodward, H. Tlimmer, C. C. Odlin. H. 11., Huggins, and Drs. G. Kemp and Luke; musical director, Mr. I. Barnes; executive committee. Misses Exton. Sliotlander, Mesdames Woodward and Townsend. and Messrs. A. J. Mazengarb, D. F. McArthur, D. Alexander. J. Cook, and 11. Liardet; lion, secretary. Mr. M. E. Nolan; hon. treasurer. Mr. W. Jameson; trustees. Messrs. D. K. McArthur; 11. A. Huggins, and L. McAlister. TECHNICAL SCHOOLS EDUCATION *. LOCAL EXAMINATIONS. The Minister of-Education (the Hon. R A. Wright) stated yesterday that in response to a generally expressed desire on the part of the technical schools for the establishment of local technological examinations to take the place _ in u large measure of the examinations hitherto held by the Department for the City and Guilds- of London Institute, it lias been decided that local examinations conducted by the Department shall lie held in November of the present year. “It is intended,’’ said the Minister,, “that the examinations to be set up in November shall be based on the .provi sional syllabuses issued last year to the technical schools. These provisional syllabuses were, in the main, based on those of the City and Guilds of London, which have been in use for many years in the schools, but were specially drawn up by small committees of trade experts and technical school teachers and endorsed by the interim committee appointed in anticipation of the establishment of a Technical Schools’ Board.”
