CASES AGAINST MINERS
ALLEGED INTIMIDATION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Westport, September 18. Mr. Meldrum, S.M., was engaged this afternoon and evening hearing an information brought by the police against certain residents of Denniston and Burnett s Face as a sequel to the demonstration held on August tl against the Cascade cooperative '(who miners term tribute) party. In all 33 informations were laid, 25 alleging intimidation and besetting, one hindering a constable in the execution of his duty, and seven using insulting language. Amongst the defendants on the last charge wore some of the womenfolk. The defence was that the demonstration was intended as a peaceful protest against the system of working which the miners’ unions regarded as inimical to their principles. The use of insulting language was denied./Jpdgment was reserved.
